How Much Sleep is Needed? Many people have often asked themselves, along with medical professionals, how much sleep do we really need in order to feel refreshed and to be healthy? This is a good question but there are many different factors that go into this answer. One of the main factors that come into play is how old the individual actually is. This article will briefly explain how much sleep is needed by different individuals, based on their age.

We will first look at very small children. It has been suggested that most infants actually need 16 hours of sleep each day. This may be why they seem to eat and sleep all of the time. They actually need this sleep to help them grow. However, it is obvious that as they begin to grow, they will need less sleep. Teenagers really only need about nine hours of sleep each night. Therefore, if you have a teenager that is sleeping all of the time, you may want to discuss what is causing them to be so tired. They really do not need that much sleep to grow and be healthy. Actually, there are times when too much sleep can just make the individual more tired throughout the day.

Adults will often need anywhere from five to 10 hours of sleep. It is recommended that the person gets seven to eight hours but some people may function well with less, while others need a little bit more in order to make it through the day. Women that are pregnant will need more sleep as their energy levels may be down. This is something to keep in mind because the woman will need to make time for this extra sleep in order to help her baby grow.

In general, it is a good idea to remember that if you are tired a lot during the day, you are not getting enough sleep at night. This is definitely something that you need to take seriously. So if your feeling fatigued throughout the day, your body may not be getting enough “recharge” time and you may want to work on increasing the amount of sleep that you are getting at night. There are many negative effects related to a lack of sleep that include a decreased immune system, depression, or even problems with your memory. So, getting the right amount of sleep is definitely needed by everyone in order to be at their best.
