    About the Drug

    Anafranil (Clomipramine) is used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. It works by increasing the brain chemical serotonin to help maintain mental balance.

    Proper Usage

    Anafranil comes in capsule form and is usually taken 2-3 times per day with meals at the beginning of treatment. After several weeks it can be taken once per day at bedtime. It may take several weeks before you get the full effect of the medication.

    What If I Missed a Dose?

    In the case that you miss taking your medicine, it is recommended that you take it when you remember. It is NOT advised to “double dose” (taking both your missed dose and your next one). What’s most important is you get back to your medication regime and avoid missing doses without professional consult.

    How Can I Store this Medicine?

    This medication should be stored at room temperature away from light, heat and moisture.

    Possible Side Effects

    The side effects associated with Anafranil should lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your doctor if they persist or get worse.

    • drowsiness
    • dry mouth
    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • diarrhea
    • constipation
    • nervousness
    • decreased sexual ability
    • decreased memory/concentration
    • headache
    • stuffy nose
    • change in appetite or weight

    • uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
    • seizures
    • changes in heart rhythm
    • difficulty urinating/loss of bladder control
    • believing things that are not true
    • hallucinations
    • eye pain
    • shakiness
    • difficulty breathing or fast breathing
    • severe muscle stiffness
    • unusual tiredness or weakness
    • sore throat, fever, and other signs of infection

    Warnings/Precautions

    Tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions. Taking Anafranil can increase the symptoms associated with these disorders.

    • heart disease/heart attack/stroke/seizures
    • bipolar disorder/schizophrenia
    • kidney or liver disease
    • overactive thyroid
    • glaucoma
    • problems with urination
