Seniors and Medications – What You May Need to Know

It seems inevitable that as we age, we will be placed on medications.  But, many people do not realize that this also comes with some added risks.  This is especially true as we continue to get older.  Therefore, there are a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration when we spend some time thinking about senior citizens and the medications that they are taking on a regular basis.  This article will outline a few of the things that you will want to keep in the back of your mind as you begin to age.  They will also come in handy if you are taking care of someone that is elderly who is on a great deal of medications.

Consider These Things:

1.)     Take the time to write down all of the individual’s medications so that they will have this list with them when they go to the doctor’s office or they are out and about.  You never know when there may be an emergency and they will need to have this list with them.

2.)    Take the time to learn what medications your loved ones are on.  This will help you keep track of this information as well so that you can make sure they are taking exactly what they are supposed to take.

3.)    You might want to write down when all of the medications are due to be filled.  You can place all of this information on a calendar somewhere.  It can be very difficult if an individual is out of the medications that they really need.  That is why you need to be able to make sure that the medications are filled like they are supposed to be filled. On time is always better than late.

4.)    Help your loved one organize their medication so that you know they are taking all of their medications like they are supposed to.  This will also help them verify that they have taken the medication on time and that they are not taking it twice in one day.

5.)    Speak to the doctor about all of the medication that is being taken.  This will help ensure that your loved one is not taking medications that may work negatively against each other.  This can really cause a great deal of difficulties for your loved one and it can be dangerous.
